How to Log Into Your Router

3 Mins read

The three steps for logging into your router are as follows:

Take an internet speed test before login into your router to troubleshoot speed issues. By doing so, you'll be able to compare results as you adjust your settings and know your starting point.

1. Connect to your router

You have two options for connecting to your router: wirelessly or with an Ethernet cable. You are already connected to your router if you are currently utilizing your home internet.

2. Find the default IP address for your router.

Although it is the most technical step in the entire procedure, it is not difficult. The good news is that your router may already have what you need printed. For instance, Linksys' routers come with a straightforward web address on the bottom: linksysmartwifi.com. You only need to type that into a web browser to get started.

You'll need to get your hands filthy if the router's IP address or URL isn't written there. Searching for "[router model] default IP" in a search engine is the simplest method. If you are unsuccessful, you can find the address by using the operating system of your device, as we will explain below.

Last but not least, the majority of modern routers offer mobile apps to access their settings, such as TP-Link Tether, Xfinity app, or D-Link Wi-Fi. The LAN IP address of the router is often provided by these programs. For instance, this information can be found under Advanced Settings > Local Network Settings in the Linksys app.

Find your router’s IP address on iOS and iPadOS

Step 1: Click to launch the Settings app.

Step 2: Click Wi-Fi.

Step 3: Tap your network.

Step 4: Note the number that is shown next to Router. To access the router's settings, you must use that private IP address.

3. Log in using a web browser

After obtaining the router's IP address, enter (or paste) it into the address bar of any web browser. The login page for your router will then open in a new browser tab.

You'll need the default login information for the router if this is your first time. You may look up this information online, on a sticker connected to your router, or in the user manual for that router.

To test whether you can get access, try doing this first:

User name: admin

Password: password

If you don't remember your login information off the top of your head, it's worth a try because many routers utilize this combination as the default username and password. Just keep in mind to alter it once you're inside to something harder to guess.

Note: Hard-reset your router—pressing the recessed Reset button for approximately 10 seconds should do the trick—if you previously specified a custom login or password and are unable to restore them. You may then log in using the default credentials after that. Do not forget that a hard reset will also erase your Wi-Fi network and password.
